Waqf Amendment Bill Sparks Uproar: Muslim Leaders Vow Fierce Resistance!

Mumbai: A political storm is brewing as Hazrat Sayed Moin Miyan Sahab, President of All India Sunni Jamiatul Ulema, along with Raza Academy and other leading religious organizations, has vehemently opposed the clearance of the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).

Denouncing the move, Hazrat Moin Miyan revealed that despite personally attending the first JPC meeting alongside top legal minds, including Adv. Rizwan Merchant, their detailed objections were blatantly ignored. In a controversial turn, all amendments proposed by opposition members were rejected, while 14 amendments from BJP MPs were approved without deliberation!

Introduced in the Lok Sabha on August 8, 2024, the bill is being slammed for stripping the Muslim community of its control over Waqf properties, a direct blow to religious autonomy enshrined under Article 25 of the Indian Constitution.

Key Flashpoints of the Bill:

  • ✔ State control over Waqf Boards & Tribunals – seen as a direct attack on religious freedom.
  • ✔ Mandatory inclusion of non-Muslims on Waqf Boards – triggering accusations of unwarranted interference.
  • ✔ Fear of political exploitation – increasing government hold over Waqf assets, possibly leading to misuse for personal and political gain.

Calling the bill “a betrayal of trust,” Maulana Khalilur Rehman Noori, Secretary of All India Sunni Jamiatul Ulema, issued a strong warning: “We reject this bill outright! The government must engage in meaningful consultation with the Muslim community before bulldozing such critical amendments.”

With tensions mounting, all eyes are now on whether the government will reconsider or face nationwide resistance!
