Historic Symbol of Faith in Madinah: The “Noon” Inscription on the Right Side of Bab-us-Salam at Masjid an-Nabawi

Madinah al-Munawwarah: On the right side of the Bab-us-Salam (Gate of Peace) at the sacred Masjid an-Nabawi lies a remarkable Qur’anic inscription featuring the Arabic letter “Noon” (ن). This mark is considered a living testimony of Islamic history. It is believed to be located at the exact site where, during the era of Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), the parnala (roof drain) of a Sahabi (Companion of the Prophet ﷺ) once stood.

The Ottoman Turks preserved this sacred spot with immense reverence and care. Today, the golden calligraphy shines brilliantly on the walls of Masjid an-Nabawi — not only as an artistic masterpiece but as a symbol of faith, history, and the spiritual legacy of the Sahaba (RA).

This inscription, crafted in elegant Thuluth and Kufi styles, represents the finest tradition of Ottoman Islamic calligraphy. The verse inscribed on this wall is from the Holy Qur’an, Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197):

وَتَزَوَّدُوا فَإِنَّ خَيْرَ الزَّادِ التَّقْوَىٰ
“And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is piety (taqwa).”

This verse continues to inspire every visitor to Madinah, reminding them that the truest journey is the one taken with taqwa and remembrance of Allah in the heart. The “Noon” on Bab-us-Salam stands as a timeless symbol of purity, faith, and Islamic heritage.
