Business provides livelihoods and connects communities, but trust can be damaged by misleading claims, hidden charges or broken promises. Islamic ethical principles emphasise honesty, fulfilling agreements and avoiding injustice. This article is a practical introduction, not a ruling on a specific commercial contract.
Describe products truthfully
Give accurate information about quality, size, condition, origin and limitations. Disclose defects that could reasonably affect a buyer’s decision. Photos should represent the actual item, and advertising should not promise results that cannot be supported.
Make prices and terms clear
Before a sale, explain the price, delivery date, payment method, return conditions and any additional charges. Contracts should be understandable to both sides. Keep receipts and written confirmations, especially for online orders or high-value purchases.
Use fair measures and timely delivery
Ensure weights, quantities and product descriptions are accurate. Deliver what was agreed, and notify the customer promptly if a delay or substitution becomes necessary. If a business cannot fulfil an order, offer a fair remedy consistent with the agreement and local law.
Respect workers and customers
Pay workers according to agreed terms and applicable law. Do not exploit someone’s lack of knowledge, language ability or urgent need. Protect customer data, avoid discriminatory treatment and handle complaints without insults or intimidation.
Resolve disputes responsibly
Keep records, listen to both sides and try to correct genuine mistakes. Where a disagreement cannot be resolved, use appropriate mediation, consumer-protection bodies or legal channels. A religious label alone does not prove that a business practice is ethical; examine the actual conduct and contract.
Useful habits include maintaining transparent accounts, separating personal and business funds, training staff and reviewing customer complaints. Read the Quran at Quran.com and our guide to amanah in everyday life. Trust is earned by consistent, fair behaviour.
