Saudi Arabia has introduced a new road safety initiative designed to support drivers traveling during the Hajj season and beyond.

The project, launched by the General Authority for Roads, focuses on improving visibility and reducing driver fatigue on long-distance routes used heavily by pilgrims.

The initiative, called “Darbak Noor” (Your Path is Light), was launched as part of the Kingdom’s operational plan for Hajj 2026 (1447 AH). Its main purpose is simple: help drivers stay awake, stay focused, and reach the holy sites safely.

Every year, millions of pilgrims travel between Makkah, Madinah, and other key areas. These long journeys often involve extended driving hours, especially at night, which increases the risk of drowsiness, distraction, and accidents.

To reduce these risks, Saudi Arabia is upgrading road infrastructure using advanced lighting systems that make roads clearer, improve driver concentration, and create a more comfortable driving experience.

The General Authority for Roads installed 16 laser units along the Migration Road connecting Makkah and Madinah. Each laser projects colorful overhead illumination visible up to 2 kilometers ahead.

The system operates automatically during nighttime hours when driver fatigue typically increases. Solar Road Markings Function Workers placed 1,110 solar-powered road markers (known as “cat’s eyes”) along the same route.
