Masjid al-Haram Cooling System Maintains 22–24°C for Worshippers

Key Takeaways

  • The Grand Mosque’s cooling system has a capacity of about 155,000 refrigeration tons.
  • Temperatures across the mosque are kept between 22°C and 24°C at all times.
  • The system also cleans the air with up to 95% filtration efficiency.

The General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque runs an integrated cooling system at Masjid al-Haram (Grand Mosque) that ranks among the largest of its kind in the world.

With a capacity of nearly 155,000 refrigeration tons, the system keeps temperatures steady between 22°C and 24°C across the mosque, giving worshippers comfort even during the busiest times and the hottest months of the year.

Air Quality and Coverage

Alongside cooling, the system filters and treats the air with an efficiency of up to 95%, removing impurities to keep the environment clean for those praying and performing Umrah.

The cooling network spreads across close to 1.5 million square metres, reaching the prayer halls, courtyards and surrounding facilities so that cooled air is spread evenly across every part of the mosque used by worshippers.

Meeting Rising Visitor Numbers

The authority uses modern engineering methods to run and maintain the system, aiming to keep pace with the increasing number of worshippers and Umrah performers while keeping the mosque’s cooling and air quality at a high standard.
