Jamia Millia Islamia has set May 15, 2027 as the deadline to approve and implement a constitution for its students’ union, opening the way for the first union elections on the New Delhi campus in nearly two decades. The order, dated October 29, 2026 and signed by Registrar Prof. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, also revokes disciplinary action against protesters, who have now called off their hunger strike.
The decision came on the university’s 106th Foundation Day and ends an agitation that began on October 12.
Key facts
- The students’ union constitution must be approved and implemented by May 15, 2027.
- After approval, the university will notify elections under the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines on student union polls.
- Polls are to be held within six weeks of the start of the next academic session, which students say begins around July 16, 2027.
- All show-cause notices, suspensions, rustication and campus-ban orders linked to the protest are to be withdrawn.
- Jamia’s students’ union was dissolved in 2006; the last elections were held in 2005.
What the new order says
According to the order reported by ANI, the administration acted on a request letter from the students on hunger strike and their delegates, after a four-member student delegation held talks with officials. The key line sets a firm date: the work “shall be completed by 15th May, 2027.”
Once the constitution is in place, the university will issue an election notification following the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations, the national framework that governs student elections in Indian universities. The order also asks protesting students to end their stir with immediate effect, which they did.
Why the students rejected the first offer
Three days earlier, on October 26, the administration had promised elections within 15 days of the constitution being approved, withdrew suspensions and show-cause notices, and announced a review of security staff conduct during the protest. Outlook and National Herald both reported that some students kept up their sit-in because that offer gave no date for approving the constitution, leaving the timeline open-ended.
The October 29 order fills that gap. One demand remains unmet: according to ANI, the students’ call for the Proctor’s resignation was not addressed.
Why it matters for Muslim students
Jamia Millia Islamia, founded in 1920 during the freedom movement, is one of India’s best-known centres of higher taleem for Muslim students, and draws applicants from Marathwada and across the country. An elected union gives students a formal voice on hostels, fees, libraries and campus safety, and it is a training ground for future community and public leaders.
The Islamic tradition has long tied learning to institutions built and run by the community itself — a story we explored in our profile of Fatima al-Fihri, who founded the world’s oldest university. What happens next
The next milestone is approval of the union constitution, due by May 15, 2027. Students will be watching whether the draft is shared and discussed with them before it is finalised. If the schedule holds, elections would take place in the first weeks of the 2027-28 session. Official updates are expected on the Jamia Millia Islamia website.
