For Eusoff Azman, the chance to perform Hajj this year is the result of a plan that began when he was still a baby.

His mother registered his name with Lembaga Tabung Haji in 2008 and consistently set aside money over the years so he would one day be able to make the pilgrimage.

He said he felt thankful beyond words for her effort and foresight.

“Thank you, Mum. If you had not started saving and planning for me from such a young age, I may not have had this opportunity today,” he said.

Eusoff added that the true meaning of his mother’s sacrifice only became clear after he arrived in Makkah.

“Only when I reached here did I realise that my mother was not just thinking about my future in this world, but was already preparing me for the hereafter since I was a baby” he said.

A former Royal Military College student, Eusoff described the pilgrimage as one of the most meaningful experiences of his life. It was also the first time he had travelled overseas without his family.

He said his parents and several siblings had already completed Hajj, and this year his turn finally came.

Even though he came alone, Eusoff said he never felt lonely. The older pilgrims in his group treated him with kindness and looked after him as though he were one of their own.

“I am the youngest in the group. My roommates are all in their 50s and 60s, but they treat me like their child. They always check on me, asking whether I have eaten or returned to the room,” he said.

“Here, I am learning not only about worship, but also about life, respect for elders, and the meaning of brotherhood,” he said.

Eusoff said he now understands the quiet sacrifices his parents made over the years, saving little by little so he could one day perform Hajj.

He hopes other parents will be inspired to begin preparing early for their children’s pilgrimage.
