Powerful 6.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Eastern Afghanistan, Leaving Over 800 Dead and Thousands Injured
A devastating 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late on Sunday, September 1, 2025, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. The epicenter was near the city of Jalalabad, affecting the provinces of Kunar, Nangarhar, and Laghman.
Extent of the Disaster
The earthquake resulted in at least 812 confirmed deaths and over 2,800 injuries, with the majority of casualties reported in Kunar province. Entire villages were flattened, particularly in remote districts like Nurgal and Watpur. In Nurgal, villages such as Wadir, Shomash, Masud, and Areet were reportedly destroyed, with up to 90% of residents feared dead or injured in Wadir alone. The region’s poorly constructed mud-brick homes, especially on mountainous slopes, contributed to the high casualties.
Challenges in Rescue and Relief Efforts
Rescue operations have been hindered by blocked roads, rough terrain, and limited resources. Helicopter evacuations have been conducted, with 40 flights transporting over 420 casualties to hospitals. The Taliban-led government has mobilized military and medical teams, and international aid is beginning to arrive. India has sent 1,000 family tents and 15 tonnes of food material, with more aid planned.
Humanitarian Crisis
The earthquake exacerbates Afghanistan’s ongoing humanitarian crisis, compounded by funding cuts from international donors. U.S. aid has decreased from $3.8 billion in 2022 to $767 million in 2025, limiting the capacity of humanitarian organizations to respond effectively. Additionally, women and children in conservative areas face difficulties accessing emergency care due to cultural barriers and a lack of female medical personnel.
Global Response
Countries like Iran and India have extended condolences and offered aid, while the Taliban government has appealed for increased international support. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimates that at least 12,000 people have been directly affected by the disaster.
Ongoing Situation
As rescue operations continue, the full extent of the damage remains unclear, with many affected villages still inaccessible. The humanitarian community is urging for increased international assistance to address the immediate needs of survivors and to support long-term recovery efforts.
The earthquake has highlighted Afghanistan’s vulnerability to seismic disasters and the urgent need for improved disaster preparedness and response systems. Organizations such as the International Rescue Committee and Save the Children are mobilizing aid and support for the affected communities. As the situation develops, it is crucial for the international community to provide the necessary resources and support to help Afghanistan recover from this devastating disaster.
