How to Perform Salah (Muslim Prayer) Step by Step

Salah (prayer) is an essential act of worship in Islam, performed five times a day. It consists of physical movements, recitations, and supplications. This guide will walk you through the step-by-step process of performing Salah correctly.

1. Preparation for Salah

Before performing Salah, a Muslim must prepare by ensuring cleanliness, proper attire, and facing the correct direction.

1.1 Purification (Wudu)

Performing Wudu (ablution) is required before Salah. It involves:

Washing hands, mouth, and nose.

Washing the face and arms up to the elbows.

Wiping the head and ears.

Washing the feet.

If one is in a state of major impurity, Ghusl (full body wash) is required.

1.2 Dress Code

Men: Clothing must cover from the navel to the knees.

Women: The entire body should be covered except for the face and hands.

1.3 Facing the Qibla

Stand in the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca.

1.4 Intention (Niyyah)

Make a silent intention in your heart about which prayer you are about to perform.

2. Performing Salah

Each Salah consists of Rak‘ahs (units). Below is a step-by-step guide for one Rak‘ah:

Step 1: Takbir (Starting Prayer)

Raise both hands near the ears (shoulders for women).

Say:

“Allahu Akbar” (الله أكبر) (God is the Greatest).

Place the right hand over the left on the chest.

Step 2: Recitation (Qira’ah)

Recite Surah Al-Fatiha (The Opening Chapter).

Bismillah hir-Rahman ir-Raheem… (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful).

Recite any additional Surah (e.g., Surah Al-Ikhlas).

Step 3: Ruku (Bowing)

Bend forward, keeping your back straight.

Place your hands on your knees.

Say:

“Subhana Rabbiyal Azeem” (سبحان ربي العظيم) (Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great) (3 times).

Step 4: Standing (I’tidal)

Stand upright and say:

“Sami’Allahu liman hamidah” (سمع الله لمن حمده) (Allah hears those who praise Him).
“Rabbana lakal hamd” (ربنا لك الحمد) (Our Lord, all praise is due to You).

Step 5: Sujood (Prostration)

Kneel down and place your forehead, nose, palms, knees, and toes on the ground.

Say:

“Subhana Rabbiyal A’la” (سبحان ربي الأعلى) (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High) (3 times).

Step 6: Sitting Between Sujood

Sit briefly with your feet folded under you.

Say:

“Rabbighfir li” (رب اغفر لي) (O Lord, forgive me).

Step 7: Second Sujood

Perform another prostration, repeating “Subhana Rabbiyal A’la” (3 times).

3. Completing Salah

If there are multiple Rak‘ahs, stand up and repeat the steps.

In the final Rak‘ah, remain seated after the second Sujood.

Step 8: Tashahhud (Testimony of Faith)

Recite the Tashahhud while sitting:

“At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat…” (full recitation).

Step 9: Salawat (Sending Blessings)

Recite Durood (Salutations upon the Prophet):

“Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin…”

Step 10: Tasleem (Ending Salah)

Turn your head to the right and say:

“As-salamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullah” (السلام عليكم ورحمة الله).

Turn your head to the left and repeat the same.

Rak‘ah Count for Each Prayer

The five daily prayers in Islam consist of different numbers of Rak‘ahs (units of prayer).

The obligatory (Fard) prayers include Fajr, which has 2 Rak‘ahs, Dhuhr with 4 Rak‘ahs, Asr with 4 Rak‘ahs, Maghrib with 3 Rak‘ahs, and Isha with 4 Rak‘ahs.

Additionally, there are Sunnah and Witr prayers, which are voluntary but highly recommended.

Many prayers include Sunnah Rak‘ahs before or after the Fard units, such as Dhuhr with 4 Sunnah before and 2 Sunnah after, Fajr with 2 Sunnah before, and Isha, which is often followed by 2 Sunnah and 3 Witr Rak‘ahs.

Other important prayers include Jumu‘ah (Friday Prayer), which consists of 2 Fard Rak‘ahs instead of Dhuhr, with Sunnah Rak‘ahs before and after.

Taraweeh, performed during Ramadan, typically consists of 8 or 20 Rak‘ahs, while Tahajjud, an optional night prayer, can be prayed in any number, usually in sets of 2 Rak‘ahs. The Witr prayer, typically performed after Isha, consists of 3 Rak‘ahs.
