Bhopal, 21 October 2026: The Madhya Pradesh State Waqf Board has awarded scholarships worth ₹21.6 lakh to 289 orphaned children for the 2026–27 academic year. The students, from kindergarten to Class 12, received cheques, certificates and mementos at a function in Bhopal under the board’s Waqf Shahjahani Yateem Scholarship Scheme.
The money did not come from a government grant. It came from the annual rent earned on part of the Waqf Idara Yateemkhana Shahjahani property in Bhopal — a practical example of Waqf income being returned to the purpose it was meant for: the care and taleem of those in need.
Who received the scholarships and how they were chosen
The scheme is open to orphaned boys and girls studying from KG to Class 12. According to reports from the event, the board advertised twice in newspapers to invite applications, and beneficiaries were selected on merit. Guests at the ceremony noted that covering orphans’ school fees in this way was being described as a first for the board.
Board chairman Dr Sanwar Patel, who holds Cabinet minister rank, presided. Bhopal’s Shahar Qazi Syed Mushtaq Ali Nadwi gave the students words of advice, and board CEO Dr Farzana Ghazal delivered the vote of thanks. Local community figures, including the Bhopal district Haj Committee president and office-bearers of the Yateemkhana, also attended.
Waqf rent as a source of education support
Dr Patel linked the scholarships to better management of Waqf property. He said rent-related reforms and tighter protection of Waqf assets had raised the board’s income, and pointed to roughly 4,000 tenancies under Auqaf-e-Amma. If tenants pay on time, he said, more money could go into education aid. He described the board’s approach to taleem as encouraging children “to learn, teach and contribute to nation building”. Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav sent a written message praising the initiative, the reports said.
For Muslim readers, the story touches a basic question about Waqf: how a trust created for Allah’s sake can serve the living community. A Waqf property that earns fair rent and spends it transparently on orphans’ schooling is close to what the founders of such endowments intended. Our earlier guide explains good practice: How to manage Waqf and community property with amanat and transparency.
The Islamic paigham behind caring for orphans
Care for the yateem is a repeated theme in the Quran. Surah Ad-Duha (93:9) instructs believers not to oppress the orphan, and the Rasool ﷺ said that the one who looks after an orphan will be with him in Jannah like two fingers held together (Sahih al-Bukhari). Education is one of the most lasting forms of that care, because it gives a child the means to stand on their own.
What this means for other states, including Maharashtra
Many State Waqf Boards hold properties that earn rent but are often in the news for disputes rather than for welfare. Bhopal’s model — rent from a specific Waqf property ring-fenced for a named scholarship, advertised publicly and awarded on merit — is simple enough to copy. Community members in Jalna and across Marathwada can ask whether local Waqf income is reaching students in a similar way.
