Can You Bring Extra Zamzam Water Home After Umrah?
Key Takeaways
- Every Umrah pilgrim receives one official 5L sealed Zamzam bottle — placing it inside checked luggage is not allowed
- Bringing extra Zamzam beyond the 5L allowance is not guaranteed — rules vary by airline and airport
- Rigid containers are more likely to clear security than soft plastic bottles, which risk being flagged for leaking
Every Umrah pilgrim departing Saudi Arabia is entitled to one factory-sealed 5L bottle of Zamzam water.
The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah requires that pilgrims purchase it from an official sales point, carry only one bottle, and present proof of Umrah registration through the Nusuk app.
Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has also directed all airlines operating in the kingdom not to allow passengers to place Zamzam bottles inside their checked luggage. The bottle must travel separately.

What About Bringing More Than 5L?
The official allowance covers one 5L bottle per pilgrim. Beyond that, there is no guaranteed right to carry additional Zamzam — and trying to do so without checking the rules first can cause problems at the airport.
Many pilgrims pack extra Zamzam inside their checked bags. Sometimes it passes through without issue. Other times, airport staff ask for the bag to be opened and the Zamzam removed, slowing down the check-in process for everyone in the queue.
Rigid Containers vs Soft Plastic
From experience travelling with Umrah groups, some airlines have allowed pilgrims to carry additional Zamzam into the cabin in a rigid jerrycan rather than inside checked luggage. In a number of cases, rigid containers passed through X-ray screening without any problems. Soft plastic bottles were more likely to be questioned — partly because of the risk of leaking under pressure.
Standard plastic bottles from shops in Makkah are not designed for cargo holds. At altitude, pressure changes can cause seals to fail, leaving luggage soaked on arrival.
What to Do Before You Travel
Policies differ between airlines and airports, and what worked for one pilgrim on one flight may not apply to yours. The safest steps are:
- Check with your airline before travelling if you plan to carry more than your official 5L
- Arrive at the airport early in case your luggage needs extra inspection
- Use a rigid container if bringing additional Zamzam — avoid soft plastic bottles
A quick call or check of your airline’s website before departure can prevent unnecessary stress at check-in.
